Now I Know Why I Don’t Like Guacamole

Sometimes you just come across information you have to share. Today’s bit of trivia is about the avocado, which is indigenous to the America’s (specifically, Mexico). Both avocado and guacamole owe their names to the Central American language of Nahuatl. And, translated into English,  guacamole literally means testicle sauce.

That might explain why, when introduced in the UK, they were marketed as Alligator Pears. No word on if Pears is slang in the UK for testicles, but customers wouldn’t buy Alligator Pears, so they changed the name back to avocado.
