Trivia: Pumpernickel

If there is one thing I’m known for, even more so than having a website about grapes on plates, it’s odd, obscure facts and trivia. Here’s an interesting one I learned the other day about one of my least favorite bread, pumpernickel.

Apparently the Germans, who were first to bake the coarse, rye based bread, didn’t much like it. “Pumpern” is German for fart, and “nickel” is German for goblin. So the Germans likened it to eating goblin farts.

Yummy.

No word yet on what it would taste like if cooked in a Dutch oven…
